World Heritage Day 2020

Virtual visit to the tomb of the Priest of Purification

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities celebrates World Heritage Day in a different way, as part of the precautionary measures taken by the Egyptian state and the world to prevent the Corona virus. The Ministry has chosen the Saqqara Archaeology Zone to be this symbol to celebrate this year’s World Heritage Day specifically the tomb of the Priest of Purification, "Wahati".

This tomb is one of the most important discoveries made by the Ministry in recent years, not only because of the colours and treasures it carries, but also because it reminds us of the ancient Egyptian interest in preventing diseases and using all available disinfection and sterilization tools, such as water, oils and perfumes.

In light of the precautionary measures that the world is taking to combat the  corona virus, we take advantage of the celebration of World Heritage Day, to remind ourselves that we need to learn from our elders regarding prevention and commitment to cleansing and personal hygiene, as well as following the instructions of governments and health authorities, so that we can overcome this danger .

Professor Dr Khaled Al-Anani, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, takes us inside the magnificent Wahati tomb in Saqqara which was revealed in 2018, and is considered one of the most important discoveries in this decade. The owner of this tomb is the high priest of purification from the Fifth Dynasty, which makes it an appropriate and timely reminder that the purification and protection of what we cherish is an innate human desire that extends over thousands of years.
