Aswan is larger but much quieter than Luxor, it is Egypt's southernmost city and one of her most beautiful, sitting alongside some of the best stretches of the Nile - wide, green and dotted with pretty islands, with high desert hills topped with the Aga Khan's Mausoleum as a dramatic backdrop

We have been to Aswan many times since 2011, the four most recent trips booked through Discover Egypt. We love Aswan & the Movenpick Resort. We go primarily to relax in the almost guaranteed hot sun but Aswan gives us the option of walking in an interesting, vibrant city watching people go about their everyday lives especially in the market/souk. If we need more things to do there are a variety of interesting sightseeing options readily available - the best of all worlds. The Movenpick on Elephantine Island is a lovely hotel; the pool is kept spotlessly clean, has lovely views of the city, the staff are very attentive & lunch food at the Pool Bar is good. We eat every evening in the Panorama Restaurant on 13th floor of the tower. It is a little more pricey than the buffet option but we like to treat ourselves on holiday & you get stunning views of the city & the Botanical Gardens/Tombs of the Nobles all lit up. The food is delicious & they have a good choice of a range of Egyptian wines. All the hotel staff are very helpful, they have helped us on numerous occasions with sightseeing & also sorted the rare problems quickly. Of course we also have Discover Egypt's ground Agents, who are always efficient & very helpful, to help with anything. We always have a Nile view room overlooking the Botanical Gardens, so a very peaceful with a beautiful view. The rooms are spacious & kept really clean, they are a tiny bit tired in places but on this trip we did a tour of the new part of the hotel & the rooms there are smart, modern & well laid out - we cannot wait to be able to stay in one. We flew Egypt Air & felt completely safe, airport security at Cairo & Aswan was as tight as anywhere else we have flown from - when scanning the cases we were questioned about certain items showing up on the screen & that's before you have got to check in. We always break the long journey each way with a night at The Meridien Cairo Airport which is modern & good. It is a resort hotel - yes I did say resort!! it has a really lovely open-air swimming pool & a good restaurant, they can do this because the runways at Cairo are well out into the desert so plane noise is not intrusive. We cannot wait for March when, hopefully, we will once again be in peaceful, beautiful, safe Aswan. Judy & Brian Wiltshire

  • March 2016 - Enjoyable stay in Aswan

March 2016 - Just a very quick note to tell you how much Brian, I & our friend Mo - enjoyed our 9 nights at the Movenpick Aswan with the 2 nights stop over at the Meridien Cairo Airport. The Movenpick was as lovely as always, I did post a comment on your advert on Facebook showing the view from 13th floor restaurant. We ate up there every evening to enjoy the fantastic view with delicious food washed down with Egyptian sparkling rose wine.... The view is one of our favourites in all the world. Aswan was completely safe, we never felt threatened. We walked the Souk on the Saturday morning & nearly every evening about 10.30pm after dinner. We visited the main mosque; Coptic Christian Cathedral - stunning inside; the Nubian Museum - beautiful interesting exhibits & Mo & I flew down to Abu Simbel. Brian & I have already been there on a Lake Nasser cruise but I could not let Mo go on his own & I am so glad I went - one of my top 10 buildings in the world.... Thank you both once again for all your help with this holiday, it was just the tonic. We will be booking for October once Easter is out of the way. Judy and Brian - Wiltshire.

  • Aswan September 2015

Brian & I had a truly lovely holiday at the Movenpick in Aswan last week. Your representative in Cairo - a very nice young man but I am ashamed to say I can't remember his name - met us as soon as we left the plane & directed us to the Visa desk. We have always applied for visas from the Consulate in London but when David took our booking he assured me it would not involve hours of queues, maybe when we first started going to Egypt & it was much busier this would have applied. Anyway it was extremely quick helped by the young man mentioned above, he also looked after us when we returned to Cairo. Also Mohamed in Aswan who looked after us there, we did not need to call him for anything - we did intend to do a fellucca but I forgot my seasick pills & I get sick very quickly on water is the rocking is side to side!!! so we will do it next year - but it is reassuring that in a place where the local language is difficult that he was there if we need him. When we arrived at the Movenpick in Aswan everything went very smoothly & we were allocated a room in the area of the hotel that we like. The service from all their staff was excellent - Fatma the lady who cleaned the room to a very high standard; all the staff at the pool - one of the cleanest pools we have ever used - were helpful, quick & charming. Breakfast was very good & the waiters helpful & cleared the tables quickly; we ate in the pool restaurant every lunchtime & the food was excellent, good choice & reasonable price. Every evening we ate dinner up on the 13th floor of the tower in the Panorama restaurant - what can I say just excellent we love it, one of the highlights of our day to eat looking down on the twinkling lights of Aswan. Good choice of food, delicious, reasonable price & the service very good.It is a lovely hotel in a fantastic setting & the staff are all just lovely. Every evening after dinner we like to change into appropriate clothing, get the ferry & walk through the market to the train station up to & then along the Nile Corniche. We felt very safe - we do leave valuables in the room - & the hassling to go into shops is manageable. A friendly 'shukran' & they leave you be, the locals are friendly & welcoming. This was our 5th visit to Aswan & we have always felt safe, even last year when they had endured a bad year with the main part of Egypt closed to tourists. It was the first time we had stayed at the new Meridien at Cairo airport - nice hotel, good food at a very good cost for a city hotel. We will definitely stop over there again. So thank you for organising our pre-winter break we will be booking with Discover Egypt next year 'Inshallah' as the Egyptians say. Judy and Brian – Wiltshire. September 2015
